2. yes. Maybe this could also hold a "language"-tree?
3. I'm not really sure. Sometimes I think something is missing, but all in all I think it's good to have a global set of categories. Makes navigating by category much easier.
1) Recent Entries, or Friends Recent Entries page :) Don't use the normal one as most of the (to my mind) interesting categories (like Blogging/Personal/My life is..) are too far down alphabetically.
2) Probably - or could we have them in alphabetical order in each column vertically, ie column 1 A-H, column 2 I-Q, Column 3 Q - Z for example? I've never got my head round horizontal-alphabetic listings ;)
3) Errrm, dunno - do you mean a customiseable front page only showing the selected categories? If so then no - I'd just use recent entries.
(oh, and while youre here can we have an Advantgo channel? Pretty please??)
:) All the best for 2004 and keep up the good work - Im throughly addicted!

2) It would help to manage it as the list grows larger certinaly. And I agree with Effendi's comment regarding vertical alphabetical listings.
3) No, I'd stick with the current fixed categories. If everyeone could divide their own it'd fragment things and make it harder to look for similar themed stuff. Maybe have fixed top level categories and user definable sub-categories?
2: Never had a lot of use for hierarchs...maybe I'm a freak. *shrug*
3: Well, that really heads back to #1, doesn't it? Since I never use the front page, the catagories don't really affect me. In fact, the announcements don't stay at the top for me, for the same reason. Maybe if you made the recent page the new front, but made the announcement's "sticky", so they always show at top?
I'd like the ability to "friend" myself, or at least see my own posts on my friends page.

Everyone, thanks for the input so far, keep it coming! :)
2) tree-like structure would be fantastic!
3) definitely a custom set of categories
=:))
2) Don't know what you're talking about. The categories aren't that useful to me I've found. The only "use" I have for them is filtering out stuff I don't want, which doesn't work because I still see them if there is more than one category chosen.
3) I like the idea of a custom set, if only for ease of searching my own entries for relevant posts.

2) Umm, like Deviantart.com's structure but with blogs. Aye could work. Or if doesn't for all the option to switch between flat and tree.
3) Agree with Xyleth would fragment the categories too much, and would more then not make them pointless.
2. I think a hierarchical structure would help on the categories, if only to compress all the Games> things I don't usually read.
3. I recognize that a bunch of custom categories could make things fragmented, but I think adding a single category "Custom: _fill_in_the_blank_" could give more data about what new categories might be useful - count for critical mass. Also, it would let us be more specific about individual odd posts.
I use recent more than categories. Flat file is fine as long as things are sorted by category (meaning I want to see all the categories, I don't want a collapsible format that would hide some of them).
2--I like the current list of categories, helps me filter out what I don't want to see and focus on what I do want to see.
3--Don't see what you mean by customizable list of categories...am a bit fuzzy on that.
I think this is a wonderful site and I thank you heartily for it!
2) I don't think it would effect me much.
3) There are a lot of catagories (for instance 12 of the gaming catagories) that I can't see myself ever using and a few (like "rants") that I wouldn't mind having.
2. Hierarchical categories are OK as long as you don't go more than three deep.
3. Custom categories seems awkward. How would I find someone else's category? Wouldn't the number of categories quickly grow out of control?
2. No opinion
3. Categories should be universal or else they become obsolete.
Uh oh. Too much information...
2. I'm assuming you mean the list of categories found on write.php? A tree listing might work, the idea of a user selectable switch for flat or tree view might be cool as well.
3. I think the categories should remain universal. If a user wants thier own categories, let them run thier own GLUE site. :)
I would, however, like to suggest adding formal method of requesting new categories to GLUE. I'm picturing a link on write.php (or in the control panel or the categories page, or on the side bar) that says "suggest a category". The results of the "suggest a category" form would be visible in the admin control panel (or sent by email/jabber?). To make things more fun, this could be a feature that the admin can enable/disable at will.
2 - Doesn't really matter
3 - Nah. I think global categories are better.
Okay, add it to g-blog.net v.2 then :)
How comes?
my answers:
1. recent entries (I substituted/index.php/recent.php a while ago)
2. hierarchial would be nice, but I'm not sure what it would be used for. Drupal does this quite nicely.
3. sounds cool.
2. I have no huge opinion on this, sorry. I pretty much hit the "recent by friends" when I get the front page, so.
3. Much fun as custom categories would be, it's true that it would probably get cluttered. Perhaps have a couple customizable categories for each person - you get all these prechosen ones, plus a few that each user defines for themselves. I'm not sure how you'd deal with that under the categories system, but maybe there would be the category of "User Defined" and you see the latest three there.
The adding-yourself-as-a-friend thing would be cool. So would a hot fudge sundae.
What're you waiting for? Chop chop! :D
