  • i'm all for donating some more to this great venture of yours. count me in.
  • You've got my $5 per month!

    Daeb
  • I am in. PJG has provided me with many hours of entertainment. We can't let it go down.
  • You have my 5.00 per month I love your site and while im at it thank you for all the work you do.
  • Count me in...I'll simply die without PJG.
  • Yes it looks like you will need a dedicated server. Now the real question is: how much load do you actually use?
Because one dedicated server doesn't cost as mch as the other and there are some sweet (cheap) deals out there.

BTW. Another option to earn a bit of money would be banners, but with th ecurrent banner market that won't earn you very much.
  • I'll try to help. I dont know how much and how often yet.

But, you think ND and MG could kick $200 to help out.

This site does wonders for JG.
  • Maybe ND and/or MG can host PJG.
  • Take down the damn forums dude. Last time I checked you had a crazy thread count going. Squads can find ways to communicate without you. Shut them damn things down.

If any squad in the GAME says they would rather you turn off pjg than them go find another free website/voice comm/ USING F2/ irc client, then I say screw them.

Leave pjg on, maybe with the ND cross server wishlist (only dev guys can post new threads) and THAT'S IT. Don't start charging dude, because right now I couldn't afford a freaking hot lunch. I just used all my vacation time so its like TRIPLE shifts for me.

Cmon man. I love pjg, but I am not gonna pay when I know you could cut out alot of those free services you are offering.
  • RoyofCA, no one is making the PJG payments mandatory. i repeat, this is completely volunteraly. and we don't mind if you cannot donate because you don't have any extra money, because i beleive we all know how tough it can be sometimes. its just a game after all. however some of us that could and willing to help may try to save the PJG in its current form, because this is the form that many many people like.

  • I'd be happy to contribute, Carlo. Don't listen to Roy (no one else does). The squad features are GREAT.
  • I also think ND should provide some subsidy, too.
  • lets also email ND and ask if there's anything they could do to help us out here. i think they know how much important PJG is to many of us and how different jumpgate would be without it.
  • referring to #6:

Gossip, I understand u have some Dreamserver "RaQ 4r" in mind (thats the one they offer for $400). I don't know about traffic/storage u need, but did u consider to rent some dedicated puretec.de server ? Traffic/storage is a bit less than the RaQ 4r, but perhaps it fits (and its about EUR100/month)
  • Im in! You've got my $5/month. Anything I can do to help. Hate to see one of JG's primary sites go down. C'mon ND..help him out here!!
  • hell, I was surprised that you didn't already have some kind of dedicated db server already! heres my $5!!!

P.S. anyone have ANY clue whats up with JOSSH? I can't seem to get to it and for some reason my paypal subscription thing canceled(even though I have plenty left on the account it would take from) so I can't log in :(
  • drizzt, GMs said on :help that its "messed up". which IMO is a useless answer since we obviously already know that much anyway =)

but lets not hijack the thread ;)
  • I still find the timing very funny... I mean Gossip makes the post on the Jossh forums...then they crash. See JG can't survive without PJG. hmmm did you post this on MightyGames as well?

I would like to help you out but I can't afford to. I'm sorry. I wish you the best of luck though. PJG is the best fansite I have ever seen for any game. JG will not be the same without the wealth of information that you provide. I wish I could help out cash wise but I can't. Again I am sorry.

  • #14 - no, I'm looking at the New Moon setup. But I got a Puretec server that serves all the images and files, it's just a simple fileserver, but it needs to be paid as well.
  • OK you got my $5/month. Hell, I'll drink more money than that tonight. At least PJG won't give me a headache tomorrow morning.

Go Gossip Go!! Get back online.
  • Well you get my help as well as PJG rocks.

    Count me in with $5/month!

    Cheers
  • I would donate my part.. if I could. I have the 20€ bill right here, but the bank wont give me a credit card until year 2144. Go figure that out yourself. If I find someone who does the paypal thing for me in Finland, I'm in.
  • well, count me in with a $5/month subscribtion, as PJG simply rocks.

I just wish the link for the $5 subscribtion would work.....
  • #23, i just tried the $5 subscription link again and it seems okay to me. what exactly is not working when you try to go there?
  • I'm in, I'll help. Gossip, also, I may be able to clear a dedicated server at work for less. Let me know what your requirements are and we'll see. I don't check this board, so email me at Martlet@geoffrey-allen.com if you want me to look into this.
  • I'm in, did the paypal thing an hour ago, keep the site going Gossip, you have my support.

    Nadreck
  • Ambrious i did not say the squad forums were bad. God, read the post next time dude. I said SQUADS CAN FIND ANOTHER WAY TO COMMUNICATE WHICH SAVES GOSSIP MONEY!

Gossip gives his community alot more than he should considering how they treat him. He thinks I am an asshole but he is a good man in my eyes.

I did not say that pjg was going pay-per-view style, just saying that he does not even NEED that many donations if he cuts back on his web services.
  • #27, the point is that if we, as a community, can help Gossip keep all the wonderful features, then why not do it? keep up the good work, Carlo, and we'll try to help you get a better host.
  • I will tonight double my monthly contribution to $6. What you do is vastly beneficial, entertaining, and I'm sure expensive and time consuming.
  • Oh.. another idea would be to host the forums on another server.

As I see it, those are one of the biggest DB killers around, especially the number of forums you are/were hosting.
  • #30, now that would cost additional money too, wouldn't it?
  • theres my $5 Gossip!! keep up the good work, we love PJG!!!!
  • I would contribute, but I can barely afford the $10 for JG right now :( Maybe in another month...
  • Don't get me wrong, I like PJG. It does provide some nice features for the game. But personally, I am not willing to pay and extra 5.00 a month. I guess the reason is that there is a lot of it that I do not use. As a suggestion, can you trim the forums, and remove things like personal roid databases? Is it possible to have the forums some where else ie:Click here for netdevils forum.
  • Gonna bump mine to $5.00
  • #34, i said this before and i will say this again. different people like PJG for different reasons. so there's a big chance that trimming *anything* would drive many people away from it. we love pjg for what it is and some of us would like to see even more features added if we can get the financials sorted out. remember, Gossip is not trying to make money on it. instead he's working his butt off to keep it running. and all we need to do is to help him pay the hosting bill. he's not asking us to pay his booz bills =)
  • Well even though I can't join in the subscription I will donate money from time to time. PJG basically were the JG boards for a long time.
  • Signed up for $5.00/month. I'll bag lunch one more day each month. :)

  • Next paycheck you got 5 bucks coming your way. Also I used to host my site with Crystaltech . They were great and constantly were upgrading to the lastest hardware/software. I checked thier site and they have dedicated servers starting at 350/month might check them out. I never used a dedicated server though so I can't say how they are like for those.
  • OK I signed up for another 5 dollars a month on top of what I already had. If you need more just ask. I do think some of the forums might need to go away though. It is just to much of us to ask that you keep that monster in place if it is costing that much money. I would say lose the private forums and use the extra money for payment for the second job. I think everyone will agree your worth it. Also not that it will help much but if you need a little extra space I have two accounts with HostRocket that I am sure you could use. Just give me a email if you need them.

    Later,
    Nelson
  • Count me in for $5/month - no problem Gossip. Let me know when/where/how...

    CrazyEddie
    jgcrazyeddie@yahoo.com
  • Have to agree with Roy.

Kill some of those forums if not all of them to save some space and bandwidth. Its entirely too much.
  • I don't even have $5 to my name right now, and my credit card is maxed out. :(

You can't find anything to cut back on? The only thing i really used was the general forum... but i know there are like 5 billion forums there and a crapload of different things to do. Was there nothing PJG can do without?

About the whole paypal thing... Donations are good, but i hope it doesnt become mandatory to donate to use PJG. My personal feeling is, no website is worth $5 a month just to visit and use their forums - especially a site for a game i'm not even playing.

I really think ND should compensate you somehow for all the work you've been putting in. PJG itself Is probably a big reason why alot of players have stuck around. Who knows, JG may have gone under by now if it wasn't for you. The way I see it, ND owes you.
  • sending you money with good old PayPal now, Gossip. :)
  • You have my $5 subscription Gossip, the sites the best.
  • I'm in for 5 a month too.
  • I use the private forums more than the general forums, but mostly I love how everything is conveniently located in one site, it is by far worth 5 dollars of my month for the amount of time I spend using it.
  • Gossip m8, talk to some of the ND/Thermis/MG guys (not that i'd trust MG to host it but...) Without PJG community JG would of been dead long ago and these companies would be nearing bankrupsy (i can't spell) talk to them and get them to host it, face it m8, JG needs PJG and you
  • HA HA APRIL FOOLS GOSSIP!!!!
  • If you find any other way for donations i'll be in. I don't have a cc so paypal won't work for me, but i'd be glad if i could help. :(
  • Hmmmm...who here knew about this site before PJG went down? (cos i didn't...)
(well its one way to advertise)
  • donation is on the way :)

    greetings

    galand, horizon ind.
  • Problem with amputating the forums is this: the reason they take so much bandwidth is cos they're so damn popular :/ The only boards I visit usually are the Babbleboard, Wishlist, Dev and EU GD. The rest of them (apart from probably the US GD and multilingual EU GD) can go as far as I'm concerned. However, I suspect that culling things like EU roleplay (never used by anyone afaik :P) won't make the slightest dent in the db usage cos no-one uses them anyway :/ As above, get Themis/ND/MG involved, cos in all honesty they need PJG badly.

Does Paypal need a credit card btw?
  • im in...done the PayPal thing a few hours ago.
  • Well, this is just a suggestion ( me being a nOOb and all ), but what about asking GAMESPY to host you? I mean, the Planet -insert name here- thing is theirs, no? and Im sure they would love to have another site listed under their name, eespecially one so big. They like big, from what I've seen. The bigger, the better. So, what do you think?
  • $5 a month, whats that in english money @ 1.42
£3.52 - I spend more when I leave my front door.

I'll sign up later. No Probs !!!

    Keep it green!
  • I know gamespy support MySQL and PHP as well and their support is very good. I used to have a worms:armageddon / worms world party site hosted with them and their support is second to none imho compared to the service they offer.

The only drawback to using them is that you must put a banner in. But then, if it brings PJG back its worth it!
  • $5/30days = $.17/day

I'll spend more than $5 on lunch today. I spent $20 taking the wife to see ET last night for a couple hours. I would have spent more than an hour on PJG today had it been up. Where else do you get so much entertainment for so little (except for JG itself).

Thank you, Gossip, for bringing us PJG in the past. Here's my $5 hoping it will continue into the future. If donations exceed the required dollar ammount, no one will mind if you pocket the extra. As you say, it's like a 2nd job--except one that doesn't pay.

    Z
  • Big deal, a banner. even JOSSH ( EU ) have banners in it. I say do whatever it takes to bring PJG back up.

PS: But not pop-up's! Please, anything but pop-ups!
  • Now way we can let PJG die like this! Count me in :)! PJG is the most useful site to anyone even remotly interested in JG and vital to anyone who cares about the game! Thanks for your great work Gossip.
  • What is 5$?
    1 less beer / weekend.
So there ya go, Gossip. I hope you get the site back on-line soon, so I don't have to start actually working ;)
  • Hey Gossip,

    Much
  • If PayPal would accept registration from Turkey; you'd probably have my $10-15;
Meanwhile: I think the idea to get hosted by GameSpy has a few advantages that the JG community might benefit from, and some disadvantages that might make you go out of your mind:
    Advantages
    1) You're hosted with GameSpy. Thats unlimited storage & traffic.
    2) The largest online gaming community. Eventhough if GameSpy wont put a direct banner to JG, "planetjumpgate.net" will be listed somewhere. The site is huge; free advertising!
    Disadvantages:
    1) They could make you change the layout of the page; to seem more like the usual planet.com layout.
    2) They might not support your prefered language (php) or database manager (mysql). [Which I believe they do, as someone commented.]
    3) Then might make you add/remove things from the site.
  • Gamespy? Noooooooooooo... :P
  • GameSpy is not an option for me, sorry. I've had some ..email exchanges with them in the past, and I'm not even considering them as an option. ;)

Banners: doesn't pay anymore. Been there, done that.

Cut off the boards: guess what the most used part of PJG is... I might trim them down a bit, but throwing them away wouldn't be logical.

Move the boards to another server: wouldn't work since the boards are an integral part of the site. I can't rip them out since most parts of the site rely on some of the boards' functions and routines.

I'm currently evaluating a few options, and I can't give you an ETA about PJG going back up yet. I've received a lot of support and got a whole lot of donation subscribers. Not enough yet, but it looks like we're getting there.

I promise to keep you posted.
  • Cant you just buy a connection and get a 2nd hand P2 400 and host it yerself¿

Maybe ya have some spare PC parts lying around to build a nice server, and I bet the ppl that visit PJG also have some parts around to help ya out.
I dont know bout the costs for such an idea, but I may be cheaper then those $400 [You should be able to rent a 10mbit+ leased line for that cash]
  • I dreamt that PJG was back up last night.....I was so happy.....:(
  • Gossip,

You do a great job,and I for one would hate to see
option 4. With that said my 5.00 subscription has just started. Thank you!
  • Donation inbound....PJG is my alt-esc home!

    Cheers,

    Deek.
  • Quick question please.

Can you see who is paying you on paypal or is it anonymous??
  • One-of-Five you can see who's paying you...

Gossip - going to link for PP now... :)

If you need equip let me know (but wait - aren't you in Europe? DOH! nm...arggh).....
  • hey gossip, could you put the counter online somewhere as we discussed yesterday? it would give us a good idea of where we're at.
  • #72 - Got donation subscription for approx. $250/month by now! Thanks everyone! :)
  • Gossip, I started my $5 subscription. If it hadn't been for PJG, I would not be still playing Jumpgate. It's the least I can do.
  • I'd favor dumping the forums (or at least aging off all but the top ten threads in each forum) too. The rotacol database is far more important.

However, Kryptonite Computers and PC-GameReview.com can afford a paltry $5/month to help keep PJG going, so you've got my subscription.
  • only 250$/month? does that include the normal donations from people... that normally equalled over 180$/month...
  • #76 - no, I meant $250 in subscriptions.

    ANYWAYS: Status update!

I've signed up for a dedicated server package at a host a friend recommended to me. Since he actually knows what he's doing and what he's talking about, this can be considered a good thing. Plus it's even a bit cheaper than what I had in mind at first: $250/month. w00t, I think! ;)

Donation subscriptions: by now there are enough to pay the monthly bills, everyone who donated: thank you very much. You guys rock, and I really appreciate it!

ETA: I think PJG should be back online by end of the week. Of course that depends on...

    a) the time it takes my new host to set the box up
    b) the time it takes me to move all the stuff from one box to the other
    c) the time it takes for all the DNS servers to update etc.

Anyways, I think it's safe to say we're going to be back on track by end of next week.

    -Gossip

    PS: Happy Easter, everyone!
  • Yay! so will you still get to keep your URL (planetjumpgate.net)? I'm assuming you own it.
  • Yes. It's highly likely I'll be using planetjumpgate.com for the time being, but the change should be pretty transparent. This way or the other, I'll keep you guys posted - naturally. ;)
  • w000000000000000000000000t!
  • well dreamhosts loss is your new hosts gain. Way to go gossip!
  • w000tage!!!
I was scared for a sec that I'd come back from my easter hols with no PJG to take a look at...I'd prolly post some stuff too.
Grats Gossip and well done for creating truly the best site I've ever used. I would gladly pay a subscription to PJG...if only I had the money...and my own credit card...and a PayPal account...and a puppy...

anyway, grats on getting ur site back!
...if this turns out to be some kind of sick April Fools Day joke I swear I'll have to start hurting people...
  • I'm sorry to hear of your toubles the site has been great if you can think of a hear and now donation system I'll help out when I can but as a single father / mortgage type person with cc maxed out most of time ongoing subs is a pain in ass Good luck God bless
  • YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
WE CAN STILL ENJOY THE BLISS, JOY AND WANDER THAT IS PLANET JUMPGATE! MAY GOD ( both the real one and the one in the game... I don't care ) BLESS US! ALL OF US! *gospel music and angel's dancing disco*
and if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm so tired im talking crap! wOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOt!
  • As many others have done, I too will help.
JumpGate can NOT do without PJG.
  • *looks over at Mystery88 strangely as he ponders..."Angles disco dancing"....hmmm...
    ROFL
  • w00t w00t!!!!!!!! PJG coming back up soon!!! thanx Gossip, I'm glad to lend my $5 a month, hell, I spent about $15 today on food alone(on campus food, expensive), so $5 a month won't be much of a big deal
  • I'm in. I must visit PJG fifty times a day! That makes 5 dollars quite good value I think!

Keep up the good work Gossip!

Edited on Apr 3rd 2002, 00:15 by Wowbagger
  • Thank god thank god thank god! i thought the apocalypse was upon us with PJG and jossh down. I love PJG! go Gossip!
  • I ordered a few servers (raq 4r's) and I am storing them nearby with the business DSL until I get a T1... I can host you for free...for some advertising or something in return. Contact me on AIM if your interested. My screen name is s a i y a e x. Peace.
  • WOOT! I will once experience the overwhelming joy of PlanetJumpgate! Oh, wait, reading the forums always made me depressed. Well, er, um, GOSSIP ROCKS!
  • why would the endless arguing and debating of the forums make u depressed? I miss the forums already, and without them a lot of stuff would get missed. Maybe we (the players) should set up an emergency PJG in case Gossip loses the site once again. If we all get those free hosty things (geocities, the stuff wot comes wiv ur ISP etc)and patch it together we could have a relatively large forum/news archive thing...just a random idea cos I have nowhere else to go till those forums are back up!

wanders around aimlessly, bumping into walls and junk
  • It doesnt work that way...
  • I.....can't.....take it......anymore.
  • I neeeeeeeeeeeeed PJG now !

Seriously, PJG is the heart of the jumpgate community, neither the ND/MG boards nor Joshh comes close to providing the depth of coverage that PJG provides(and in a much friendly user format too).
  • ...make...the....hurting...stop.

Gossip! Get it online. THATS AN ORDER!

oops, you're not even in my squad :)

j/k thats not how our squad F2 goes......
  • I'm wondering about the (appearant) tie between the status of PJG and the activity in the Jumpgate universe.

Last week, all kinds of stuff going on in game. Tons of threads, announcments and other bandwidth-eating stuff on PJG...

This week, PJG down. In game activity -- virtually nil. Well, one night had the search for scientist, but last night was dead. I was so bored I even checked into the SOL channel!
  • There is NO Jumpgate without PJG... well all know that.

    *cries in the corner*

Squad forum is down, no way to go yap at the squad--they run amok in the meantime...
  • Thankfully AQM has their own webpage, so Im not suffering complete withdrawl, but planetjumpgate is the Jumpgate community. At least 5-6 of us at AQM have pitched in our 5 bucks a month. It just wouldnt be the same without pjg.

I may not post alot on there, but I sure read alot of it.

    thanks gossip
    spirit
  • Spirit, I really like what you've done with the AQM site. BTW, I never did get that flash clock sent to me yet. :(
  • don't know how i missed this thread until just now....

anyhows, glad u found a new place to host PJG (though i love my dreamhosting, i know why you were hesitant to leave). Although i admittedly hardly ever get on PJG any more (mainly due to it being blocked from work now, bastages), it would be a horrible shame to see it go down.
