Ouch. I take it you've optimised the crap out of all the SQL stuff ("Duh! Of course I have!")? I don't know what to suggest - I don't think most people would have a problem with contributing 300 dollars between themselves (hey - even I'll chip in, but you might get paid in nappies) - after all, it's not much more than $180.

So what does the $300 buy in terms of bandwidth and power? And what about support - are you going to be able to access to the box or leave it to an engineer...the horror...

Incidentally, on a related note, do you know of any good tools or scripts to profile MySQL? I'm investigating moving a large MSSQL database into MySQL, mainly because 98% of the operations we perform are read and we don't need much in the way of redundancy or transaction support - speed is of the essence. But I need to make some comparisons. MySQL 4.x (alpha) looks good - some improvments in caching result sets in memory; the server performs a byte-per-byte comparison on frequently used queries to determine whether to use the cache. For large numbers of reads, there is (allegedly) a huge speed increase.

    Session limits (max user).

Don't go up to $300 unless you are getting almostall of that via donations. that's just way too much to pay.

    ...imho...

Do you know anyone that works for an ISP or somesuch that would plug a machine into their network and allow reduced rates for bandwidth suckage? Back in my old MU* days, if someone wanted a MU* hosted the trick was to build yourself a box, bang OpenBSD or some such on it and then borrow some space at a nearby university or ISP.

Given the page impressions PJG receives, I think an exchange of bandwidth for advertising would seem reasonable.

If you must move it up to $300 contract, and explain about it to the PJG users, I am sure they will help.

I know I will. I don't live on PJG as much as I used to, but it's still one of my favorite sites (no brown-nosing intended). I'd hate it to get session limits and such stuff because of bandwidth limitations.

Also, it's more than just a fansite--it is THE site for Jumpgate. Do you think ND would want to help?

There's a radio show in the states that I listen to on my drive home most nights. The Host raves about theses guys. Perhaps you can check them out?

    http://www.rackspace.com

Also - It doesn't seem like you've been having trouble collecting the $180 a month from PJG users. I bet if you give them (us) some warning, they (we) would be more than willing to keep the donations coming in to cover the added costs.

    -Hool

Edit: Whoops - if you don't enter a text label when using the URL popup, it spits out the wrong code... Link fixed.

BTW you can custom-build a server for your needs, (and recieve a price quote via email,) or you can take a look at some of thier pre-built configurations.

The Linux Professional Config, which should include MySQL is $195 a month.

Of course I don't know what your bandwidth and space requirements are, so you'd have to see for yourself. (Obviously) :)

~20GB+ traffic per month, 1.5mio+ page views per month, lots of queries, lots of mySQL connections (naturally).

I'm just worried to move the whole site to another host. Not only love I the NewDream network (DreamHost, DreamServers etc.) for their style and professionalism, but they're pretty cheap for that level of quality compared to the rest of the pack. Moving everything to another company and settling in would be a pain in the ass, really. There's so much custom stuff @ PJG... which is good AND bad.

I hate to be negative here, Gossip, but why would you even want to go to the trouble to support all these whiney (not the people here, the one's on PJG) babies at an additional cost every month? You really shouldn't give yourself the added stress.

And, to be frank, I don't see JG lasting another year (I bet it's down before 1 year after release) so why shell out the extra cash now? I say trim back what you have now that needs mySQL and if that's not enough then cut the least-used features. Start thinking of PJG not as your baby (and I know you do because I have websites that are not even a drop in the ocean that is PJG and think of them as my babies), but as your building block to something greater. I hope there is another great game in the future that catches your (and my) attention the way JG did and you make an even better site for that. I've been thinging about putting up a beta site (post the latest beta news, get me in betas as a tester everytime) and if you wanted to do something like that I'm sure you'd get plenty of support (monetarily and voluntarily).

I'll say this...I am not dissing PJG, in fact I am one of the biggest PJG fans. I haven't played JG since October-ish but I still comeback every single day just to see what's up. It's not the babies, it's not JG, it's the wonderful job you do on the site. I know you love it, I just don't want you to put in more than you'll get out.

I don't understand why ND haven't put any money in the basket yet or server help or anything.

Without PJG there is (almost) no jumpgate possible. Well it is but it would be so damn boring and we would all depend on JOSSH now who wants that. I'd say: ND dump JOSSH and Clear the space for PJG !!!!

The one problem I see with ND subsidizing PJG is that Gossip would no longer be "independant".
