    CRIME TO DOES NOT PAY!

Unless you're selling your porn collection to school kids! That actually pays quite a lot! At least that is what I read somewhere!

The first time it's not funny, mate... sorry.

Gossip - if you need it their site admin's address is on Google Groups, just search for the domain name.
  • Carlo Zottmann · 5 years ago
Thanks. Already did a whois on the domain name, got all the infos I'll need.
  • Lupus · 5 years ago
And for everyone else - remember to let the moderators know if you're fed up with someone else's behaviour. There are a lot of posts now, probably too many to effectively keep track of, so its not safe to assume the moderators will read the posts which irritate you. I'm sure thats part of the reason why Gossip's mail is down there on the bottom of the page. It took todays posts to make me reach for the mail button, because I normally tune out these blogs - others replied to the poster and did nothing else about it.

If anything, this incident has given me a lot of ideas about security and logging features for v2. It's going to be a fortress, the good kind of fortress, tho. For example, I have per-user logging in mind, so forget the old "let's sign up with my real email address, then change the mail address once I'm registered, haha I'm l33t lol" routine. Everytime you change anything on your core preferences (email address, for example), it's logged. I'm pretty sure I won't need to consult those logs in 99.9% of all users, but it's those 0.1% that are bothering me. Then I'm thinking about a karma system so the community can work together to filter out idiots. Also, when you comment on an entry, your mail address might be visible to the entry owner.

More moderation feature that come with more bang for the buck if needed.

Stuff like that. I'm still toying around with some ideas, but I think it's gonna be a bit safer.

    I'm with Lupus.

Gossip is a very busy man between his job, Dana, & coding. I know he doesn't have time to read everything. I was asked to help. I managed to read everything and respond quickly (unless I was asleep) when I was unemployed. I am now employed and reading everything takes a while and I admit I've resorted to skimming occasionally. The other moderator is Hooloovoo and he is also very busy.

If you see something truly offensive, let Gossip know via the e-mail link. He can make a judgement call. Hooloovoo and I try very hard to take action when it is clear action needs to happen. Or we talk about it where you can't see it. Gossip & I had talked previously about some of these users. At the time, while annoying as hell, they hadn't done anything to outright warrant banning/bozoing. So we let it slide. G-blog is an open community. One that is welcoming and honest. Not everyone can respect that, but I know that I've learned how to be more willing to put up with stuff that I wouldn't necessarily deal with otherwise. Gossip is a truly wonderful man and cares a great deal for freedom of speech & community building. Which means there is a long way to go before you cross a line.

But do remember, all, if/when you cross that line, there is no going back and you will have made several enemies for life.

To be frank, I didn't know it was the same kid, I thought we'd been invaded by some schoolkids and all their mates. I also didn't think it would piss other people off as much as it pissed me off. I blamed my level of frustration on my natural intollerance, iritableness and other such things and just decided to toddle off despite me liking this place a lot because I was about to start having a go at certain people and I didn't want to start a flaming match on here. (I have some revolting germy illness at the moment which is making me considerably more irritable than normal - quite an amazing achievement in my case). I'll completely delete the other thread, although I'm not about that much at the moment I'm sure that I'll carry on posting nonsense soon, and you'll wish you hadn't asked me to stay when you're bandwidth bill goes through the roof. ;)

I knew there was a good reason I keep on the right side of all the techy people in work, you're scary when you're angry. Thank you gossip, I didn't actually think you'd give a damn. I will go and be wrong and quiet somewhere for a while.

I'm also with Lupus. Gossip, if you happen to get hold of their hotmail accounts, would it be possible to make them public for us? It would certinally teach them a lesson.
  • petrol · 5 years ago
Admin? Moderator? Sounds like fun! Where do I sign up?

Just kidding folks. I haven't been keeping up to date on that whole bozo snafu - I was under the misguided innocent impression that GB was (as Vash says) a Love And Peace kinda place.

I vote for MadCat and Wyxie to stay.
  • Xyleth · 5 years ago
I must admit to being one of the people who looked, lauged but didn't mail Gossip. Until today they'd been relativly harmless if bloody annoying. Once Crawford started on his little crusade I should have hit that button :(

And Kitty and Wyxie I am glad you're not leaving. We're all enriched by your presance and would all be diminished by your leaving.

grmfl, internet gives people loads of freedom. Not everybody can handle it though, I'm afraid that's 'humanity' :(
  • frostedlexicharm · 5 years ago
    a semi-tangent:

Gossip, while I agree with most of what you've said, one thing gives me concern. In your 'thinking of new security features for v.2' above ("when you comment on an entry, your mail address might be visible to the entry owner"), I REALLY don't want my email known to anyone unless I give it to them. I trust MOST of the people here at g-blog, but I'd like to be able to comment and post without fear of getting flamed at my email if someone takes a post or comment the wrong way.

There have been several heated discussions among the 'more established' members of g-blog, and while I *think* nobody would, in the heat of the moment, abuse knowledge of someone's email, there's always that chance.
  • Carlo Zottmann · 5 years ago
I plan on putting a number of features up for discussion once I get around to writing them, don't worry. Was merely throwing out ideas here. That's why I wrote "might" and not "will be".

It's a two-bladed sword, your privacy on the one side and the wish to stop dickheads on the other. We'll find a way. We always have.

Once I reach said point in the development of v2, I'll post an invitation for you guys to discuss a couple of things, promised.

I lub you Gossip, I aint leaving.

Good move, G (even if I do say so myself). In fact I just got in from a particularly shit day at work and Jaye and myself just ranted about it for 10 minutes. I boot up Binky (my faithful laptop) and you've sorted it.

(to be brutally honest, I'd have emailed their admins anyway because I know the sort of shit that could get them into, having a brother that works in education over here [sorta] that was the IT admin, but then, I'm a BOFH :))

One Righteously Angry G. Powerful Face of Doom (intelligence -5) nothin'! Morn bro, if I were you, I'd hide in my cubicle all day and rock to Punjabi radio.
  • Ceebee · 5 years ago
Having worked in the education field, you find all the kid will get is a ticking off. But what hurts the school is the bad press we as a community can say about the school. Children in schools normally sign a code of conduct for internet usage, sadly however it cant be enforced due to them being minors. But the reputational damage to the school would be horrific, personally send the files to the school and let whatever and let them sort it out.

As Mull (hi mate) states we BOFHs should stick together and damn them all.

What was the harrassment? I'm assuming comments taht have been deleted.

    Sorry to hear this happened.

Blog griefers... what's the net coming to...
  • Xyleth · 5 years ago
initally it wasn't really harassment it was just some very bad spelling and inane conversations that most of us found highly irritating. However today it degenerated into out and out harrassment when one of them (Crawford) started saying abusive things directed at first Zhaneel and then Fellblade.

Although, thinking about it, I think the lad may have had punishment enough already to last a life time. I mean who the hell names their kid 'Crawford'? His parents obviously hated him from birth :p

petrol, thanks for the warning... but I think it says "you can run, but you can't hide" in my contract. :P
  • dsh · 5 years ago
Amazing - that list is nearly identical to my foes list - and all I'd seen from them was the inane conversations, etc.

@ Wyx and MC - Glad you ain't leaving :)

@ Gossip - I'm glad you made a stand after all. Good work :)

Xyleth - Crawford is his last name if its the same one mentioned in Hezzy's blog - if not, then I guess it's a baaaaad name.

Unfortunately a requirement the way things are today. Thats going in my first system build as a high priority - d***head filtering and the such, requirement of account re-activation if you change your email address, etc.

Just a thought, insead of making people email gossip put a link on each comment which marks it for moderation (like on most forum systems). Far more easy than email sending so in theory it will be used by more people.

Thanks for taking care of this Gossip :)

For some reason I find that "Report to Moderators" link below Gossip's blog avatar, very funny....

    ah well.
  • petrol · 5 years ago
Goes well along with that "who polices the police?" conundrum.
  • Zhaneel · 5 years ago
Gossip and I police each other.... not that we've ever needed it. ;-)
