What are the pros and cons of iTunes compared to similar apps you've used before; and what were these apps? I've only heard bad stuff from XP-iTunes users.

Ahhh iTunes, what a super app. "623 Songs, 1:18:55:18 total time, 2.37 GB" currently on there
To be honest i cant fault it. Compared to others id say it was way more powerfull and speedy when you want to do stuff like sorting and searching the library. You can change ID3 tags on more than song at once, like updating a whole album with details such as genre.
I only found it becase it came with my ipod (xmas). It even auto-syncs the library to the pod when you plug it in :D Get it :)
