Mulligan · 5 years agoAppleseed is your classic powersuits/cyberpunk manga and, in my opinion, Masamune Shirow's pivotal moment. It's got all the sort of things you expect from him; cute, sexy, strong cyber-chicks, big suits of (technically feasible) power armour, politics, eastern mysticism - the works. Very cool. If you get a chance to read the manga, do it. It's also one of the stronger influences on my artist buddy, James.

petrol · 5 years agoAppleseed came up on my radar more than a week ago. The old version made me nod off after five minutes or so, but the 2004 version is nothing but breathtakingly-stunning. Personally, I mostly like "magical realism" anime (and Ghibli produces a lot of that) but there is a bit of excitement about AS2004 and the Trinity engine that's used in it. Trinity engine? Look up Wonderful Days. Thanks to Veritech Pilot (see post) aka Petrol's NYC Alter-Ego. His blog focuses on some of the things that are near and dear to my own heart.
