    WTF is Manga???
  • Mulligan · 6 years ago
Manga = pulp, printed comic books (but also including the more, ahem, adult styles of Japanese comic book illustration)

    Anime = animated manga.

For example, Appleseed (Masamune Shirow) was a series of manga books before it was (badly, IMHO) animated and released on video, etc.

Manga is an art form. Manga topic cover the well-known Dragonball Z crap (i.e. kids stuff) as well as sci-fi, fantasy, politics, drama, historical, of course the adult stuff, too... you name it.

Mangas are basically novels. Drawn novels, but novels nonetheless.

pokes Gossip for coming up with a more cultured definition than him ;)

Ghost in the Shell, Gundam Wings, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura you name it. yes even Pokémon, Digimon and the new BeyBlade, all Animated Manga, "Anime".

manga often can be recognised by, the big detailed eyes (alllthough Male Manga characters often have very simple eyes), the tiny noses and mouths (in humorfull Manga comics or Anime the mouths after become gigantic when shouting) and the spiky hair. the often on G-blog mentioned Megatokyo comic is also Manga.

the more adult form of Manga and Anime, Mulligan mentioned is called "Hentai" *cough*
the drawing Gossip posted is not Hentai though, for instance, she has no nipples. ;)

    hmmm, Hentai. =P

And who could forget the old-school TIAO hentai ('tentacles in all orifices')? Anyone remember Orutsu Kidoji? [..] Damn, how could I ever watch that crap?!
  • Mulligan · 6 years ago
Man, yeah. Orutsu Kidoji. Pretty good (if not samey) storyline (Demons and Man-Beasts - i.e. an excuse for cute green-haired chicks with cat ears) but that was pretty obscene when it came down to it. I remember buying a copy for a teenager that was just about too young to get the video back when I was a student. Corrupt the youth? Yup ;) And Huri, "Ghost in the Shell" was manga before it was animated. Masamune Shirow again. He rocks.

Hmmm. I don't like manga or Anime and definitely not Hentai. Mainly because of the way women are portrayed. But I guess that view is going to make me unpopular. There is also something about all the big eyed girlie stuff that I find irritating.

I'll just wait for ppl to throw thinngs now.....
  • Huricos · 6 years ago
you guys throw, i'll hold her ;)
  • ethal · 6 years ago
I agree with you Jaye. So you view is very popular with me :) so watch out Huricos or I will bit your ankles

If you dig cyberpunk or sci-fi in general, try picking up aforementioned "Ghost in the Shell". No chick-type women, a serious and deep storyline, and a strong woman is the main character. It's a MUST if you like sci-fi, I think. A classic, really.
  • Jaye · 6 years ago
I am not a huge sci-fi or cyberpunk fan - though i did read William Gibson't Idorou. I had my leg in a plaster-cast at the time though..... I think Mull has Ghost in the Shell or if he hasn't i know someone else who has so I may give it a go :-)

No chick-type women, just big breasted women in tight rubber suits all tangled up in wires, with naked inner thy's (sometimes, for some reason)

    Every man's fantasy then......
  • Huricos · 6 years ago
kinda, but i'm more old-school than retro.

and with old-school i do mean school =) hmmmmm, girls in school uniform... =P

and before your going all "yuck, look at women your own age you sick old man!"...
...remember, they are my age! *BIG GIANT WINK*

    muehehehehehe
  • Jaye · 6 years ago
When I read the school uniform comment my first though was "They are the same age as you so that's okay". Nah!
  • Huricos · 6 years ago
just realises these years are the only chances h has in a life time to make a move on a school girl...

realises we dont wear uniforms in Holland and most of the girls are either nerds or crackwhore's (remember them?).

realises he's to shy to make a move anyways.

    realises he is realising alot!

Most of Masamune Shirow's lead characters are strong women. He's a damned good writer. Ghost, Appleseed and Orion all feature strong, female roles. If you cut through the conceptual cyberpunk stuff (which he does amazingly well, one of my buddy James' strongest influences) then you'll find a lot of very intelligent subtext - most of it Buddhist ;) - in his work. Great stuff. Did I mention that he rocks?
  • Carlo Zottmann · 6 years ago
    Nope... does he rock?
  • Mulligan · 6 years ago
Yes. Now stop spamming your own thread or I'll recommend that you bozo yourself :P
